# Gloss > Gloss is a free, open-source desktop chat app for the command-line AI agents already installed on a computer: Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Pi and Cursor Agent. It shows their conversations like a chat client and adds inline clarifications: select any text in a reply, ask about it, and the answer appears right under that sentence as a collapsible thread. Gloss never talks to a model API and needs no API keys. Each message runs the agent's own CLI in non-interactive mode inside a private folder (`~/.gloss/workspace`), so nothing appears in the user's real projects. Conversations, clarifications and attachments are stored locally in SQLite at `~/.gloss/gloss.db`. ## How a clarification works 1. Select: highlight any text in a reply. An "Ask about this" button appears over the selection. 2. Ask: a small composer opens under that paragraph. The question is sent to the agent as an ordinary message: the quoted text plus the question, in the same session. 3. Read in place: the answer appears under the sentence it is about, collapsible, with follow-ups threaded inside. Text inside an answer can be highlighted and asked about again. ## Features - Inline clarifications with nesting and follow-ups; a navigation rail lists every clarification in the conversation. - Artifacts: pages, SVG drawings, Mermaid diagrams, documents and code the agent writes open in a side pane with a sandboxed preview, versions, copy and save. - Attachments: images and text files can be dropped into a message. - Full-text search across all conversations, clarifications included; pin and tag conversations. - Export a reply or a whole conversation as Markdown with clarifications folded in under their sentences. - Per-conversation agent and model choice; web search toggle where the agent supports it. - In-app updates from GitHub releases. ## Supported agents | Agent | Command | Web search | Images | Models | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Claude Code | claude | On / off | Yes | Pick per turn | | Codex CLI | codex | On / off | Yes | Pick per turn | | Gemini CLI | gemini | Always on | Yes | Pick per turn | | Pi | pi | — | Yes | Pick per turn | | Cursor Agent | cursor-agent | On / off | Yes | Auto | ## Architecture - Desktop app: Tauri 2 shell with a Svelte 5 frontend. - Engine: Rust library linked into the shell, with a `gloss-engine` CLI for scripting.
